Drug Free Week

This week our school celebrated Drug Free Week. The motto for drug free week was "A Drug Free Life is Key". Ms. Strum and Mrs. Torrey (our counselor) talked to us about why it is so important to be drug free. During the week, Mrs. Torrey has lots of different things planned for our drug free week. One of the things that we had to do was make a drug free door. We had a great time making our drug free door. Ms. Strum had us write paragraphs as to why it is so important to live a drug free life. We had a great drug free week at our school. Thanks so much to Mrs. Torrey for her hard work.

Affixes

Since the beginning of the year, we have been learning alot about prefixes and suffixes. Ms. Strum told us that the word for this is affixes. Ms. Strum has taught us that prefixes come at the beginning of the word and that suffixes come at the end of the word. Ms. Strum also taught us that prefixes and suffixes, also known as affixes, change the meaning of the word.

Ms. Strum divided us into several groups. She gave each group a different affix. Each group was given several different words that begin with the affix that they were assigned. We then worked with our group and determined the meaning of each word basedon the root word and suffix.

Jalyn, Daijana, and Kirston working hard on finding words with affixes.
We were also divided into groups to look in magazines and find words that begin or end with the affixes. We then had to determine the meaning of each word.

Darlyn, Jame'ica, Jamiee, and Ja'Ray working hard!
We have learned so much over the past week about affixes. We now can look at a word, sentence, passage, or story to determine the meaning of the word based on the root word and the affix.

Two Digit Multiplication

Ms. Strum has been teaching us how to solve AND explain two-digit mulitplication problems. An example of this would be 73x54. This has been a hard concept to learn this year. Ms. Strum decided that since was a hard concept that she would pair us in groups. Each pair was given a problem. The pair would have to solve their problem and explain how they solved their problem. This was very challenging for us to do. The challenging part was writing in words, how we solved our multiplication problem.
Rodney and Jamiee working together on their explanation of
their two-digit multiplication.

Kirston working on their explanation of their multiplication problem.

LaQuisha and Keatan working together on their multiplication explanation.

This was hard for us to understand in the beginning. Now that we have to explain and justify our reasoning, we are learning SO much more! Come see us work!

Small Groups

We love to work in our classroom! We are so very fortunate to have extra teachers that come and work with us in our class. In the morning, we have several teachers that are in the room with us. Ms. Strum thought that this would be the BEST time to have small groups so that we could have more one-on-one instruction. We love to work in small groups! Every teacher is working with a different small group!

with partners. We are working on dictionary skills.

As you can tell, we work very hard in our room. We learn alot throughout whole group, small group, centers, and individualized instruction! Ms. Strum tells us that her favorite time is small groups! We like it too! :)

Accelerated Reader Points and Prizes

Ms. Strum is encouraging us to read SO much this year! We have to check out AR books from the library with Ms. Sasser. After we are done reading an AR book, we are able to take an AR test on the book that we read. Based on what we made on the test, we will receive a certain number of points. Once we earn our first 5 points, Ms. Strum puts our name on a cloud and we get to put our cloud on the rainbow for the number of points we earn. When we earn our first ten points, we get to take a visit to Ms. Sasser's PRIZE closet. For every ten points that we earn, we get to choose a prize out of the prize closet.

Armand was the first student to earn his 5 point AR cloud!

Kirston, Georgia, Jamiee, Jalyn, Kerronta, Keosha, Cienoshia,
Xavier, Mary, Makayla, and Dorien just received their 5 point AR cloud.

Keatan, Keshuna, Kirston, Dekawana, Jame'ica, Jamal, LaQuisha,
William, and Andrew just received their 5 point AR cloud!

Ms. Strum encourages us to read anytime that we have a spare minute. We read if we finish our work early, in the hallway, in the cafeteria, and in line for the bathroom. Ms. Strum tells us that reading will take us far. That is why Ms. Strum encourages us to read so much!
